Portfolio Alumni Profile: Javier Pereira
Field of Study: Sociology
Graduation Year: 2010
Current Position: Executive President & Founder, América Solidaria Uruguay
When asked why he chose the Nonprofit Portfolio, Javier recalls “The Portfolio provided analytical tools that enhanced my understanding of the world of nonprofit and volunteer organizations. From a practical perspective, I [also] thought the Portfolio might be useful in seeking job opportunities outside academia.”
In 2011, after graduating from the Nonprofit Portfolio Program, Javier founded a research program on civil society at the Universidad Católica in Montevideo and designed a Postgraduate Diploma to improve Nonprofit management capacities among NGO leaders. In 2013 he started working to bring América Solidaria to Uruguay. América Solidaria is a continental nonprofit organization seeking to globalize solidarity and empower communities through international volunteer programs.
To current students born in the U.S., Javier strongly recommends a study-abroad experience, saying, “It will make a difference in your life forever. You will never see your country and the world as before.” To international students like himself, he stresses the importance of getting involved in “community work” – off-campus, practical experiences to provide learning beyond the classroom.
Javier also belongs to the Academic Board of the Instituto Superior Salesiano and is a research fellow at the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores. He has three children: Mariana, Martin and Santiago.
